Freehold, NJ December 15, 2011 (Lifeblood Medical, Inc.)
Lifeblood Medical, a biotech company focused on preserving every cell in the human body, announced today that it was awarded a Phase I SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) grant by the US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command entitled “Maintenance of Tissue Metabolism for at Least 3 Hours between 20-28oC with an Asanguinous Fluid”. Valued at $100,000 over six months with the option for an additional $50,000, the recently awarded contract will allow Lifeblood to plan and Lifor® for use as an oxygen therapeutics in large animals via a planned Phase II SBIR submission in 2012, valued at up to $1 million. The Phase I award is a pre-requisite for both Phase II and Phase III SBIR awards, which involve animal and human studies, respectively.
Mr. Joseph Fischer, President and Chief Executive Officer stated, “We are very excited that the US Army has selected to fund Lifor® in a Phase I program for Oxygen Therapeutics. Uncontrolled hemorrhage is a significant military and civilian problem. Using Lifor® in this study, our goal is to reduce mortality and morbidity associated with major battlefield wounds and injuries by developing a novel asanguinous, synthetic resuscitation fluid (red blood cell replacement) that can function as a therapeutic oxygen carrier and provide nutrients for the treatment of hemorrhage. Lifor® is a patented, synthetic, animal component and hemoglobin free solution that can preserve tissues and organs at room temperature by supplying nutrients and oxygen and has potential to meet the military’s need, as well as hospitals worldwide.”
